Minister Jung voices disagreement over the shutdown of psychiatric unit in Merzig's hospital
In a surprising turn of events, the Saarland-Heilstätten GmbH (SHG) has announced the relocation of long-term stationary psychiatric care from Merzig by the end of this month, marking the temporary end of a years-long decline in stationary care in the town.
The decision has been met with criticism from the Saarland Ministry of Health, who have spoken out against the relocation of the last eight stationary psychiatric beds from Merzig. Health Minister Magnus Jung has expressed concerns about the difficulties in implementing the realignment, stating that many of these difficulties were "practically pre-programmed."
Despite the challenges, Jung sees a perspective for the future, suggesting the possibility of securing long-term stationary psychiatric care in Merzig with new partners. He has also emphasized the need for short-term care to be ensured in the meantime.
The SHG, who still holds the care mandate, has not been able to implement a "conceptual, personnel, and economic realignment" in the last four years. This noticeable cut in psychiatric care in the Merzig-Wadern district, as spoken of by Jung, has raised concerns about the availability of care for psychiatrically ill people.
It is crucial that such care is available within reach, close to their living environment. The Merzig location is considered necessary for this reason, and the ministry is already working on alternative solutions due to the known problems at the site.
Care in other Saarland districts is functioning "at least satisfactorily to very well" despite the general tense staff situation. This suggests that, with the right solutions and partners, long-term stationary psychiatric care in Merzig could be secured and improved.
In the original state hospital plan, there were provisions for 76 stationary beds for psychiatric care in the Merzig-Wadern district. The future of these beds remains uncertain, but with the ministry's efforts and Jung's optimistic outlook, there is hope for a brighter future for psychiatric care in Merzig.
