Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Leads Collaborative Effort in Developing Ammonia Bunkering Vessels

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, in partnership with INPEX and the MHI Group, is spearheading the development of ammonia bunkering vessels. This collaboration is a significant step towards a carbon neutral society, as the technology behind these vessels holds great potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry.

The ammonia bunkering vessel, designed to supply ammonia fuel to ships, boasts a tank capacity, ship maneuverability, and bunkering equipment compatible with various ammonia-fueled vessels. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has leveraged its expertise in multi-purpose liquefied gas carriers in the design of this innovative vessel.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding has already completed a conceptual study for the ammonia bunkering vessel and plans to further investigate technical development and commercialization. The company's focus extends beyond the vessel itself, encompassing the development and commercialization of relevant equipment for alternative fuel vessels.

Ammonia, a fuel that does not emit carbon dioxide when burned, is gaining attention due to its potential as a stable source of clean energy. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding aims to respond to growing social needs with this technology, contributing to the realization of a carbon neutral society.

The study on the supply of ammonia tankers, designed to deliver ammonia fuel for ships, was conducted by the classification society DNV. This study was part of DNV's "Maritime Forecast to 2050," the latest referenced forecast report as of September 2025.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding is an integral part of MHI Group's Energy Transition strategy, aligning with the group's efforts to address climate change and transition towards a sustainable future. The collaboration between Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, INPEX, and MHI Group was finalized on February 3, 2023.

As the maritime industry looks towards a greener future, the development of ammonia bunkering vessels represents a significant milestone. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding will continue to focus on developing various types of ships, including alternative fuel vessels, and will carry out further technical investigations with the aim of commercializing the vessel.
