Mothin Ali now serves as a joint deputy leader within the Green Party

In a significant move for political representation, Mothin Ali, a Leeds councillor, has been elected as co-deputy leader of the Green party in England. Ali, who was first elected as a Green party councillor for Gipton and Harehills in May 2024, is the only Muslim serving as a leader or deputy leader of a mainstream political party in England and Wales.

The population of Ali's ward, Gipton and Harehills, is significantly Muslim, with around 40% identifying as such. This demographic makeup has not deterred Ali from pursuing a career in politics, and he continues to be a strong voice for his community.

During the election campaign, Ali faced criticism for failing to sign a pledge supporting the rights of LGBTQ+ people. This decision was met with controversy, and Ali did not attend a hustings organized by the Greens' LGBTQIA+ chapter, further fuelling the debate.

Despite these challenges, Ali's political career has been marked by success. He won 33.5% of first-preference votes for the deputy leader position of the Green party, securing his place as a key figure in the party's leadership.
