Motorway 66 Accident Resulted in Driver Injury and Significant Bridge Damage; Ongoing Repairs to Bridge Railings
In an unfortunate incident that occurred this afternoon, a 59-year-old man from the Aschaffenburg area was involved in a severe traffic accident on the A66 between Steinau and Schlüchtern-Süd junctions. The man was driving a Porsche 911 Carrera, which, according to preliminary investigations, may have suffered a tyre burst.
As a result of the accident, the Porsche was likely a total loss. The impact was so significant that it caused the bridge barrier to be torn from its moorings and fall onto the L3179 road below in several pieces. Consequently, the A66 was partially closed, and the L3179 was fully closed during the cleanup operation. Traffic on the A66 was diverted onto the left-hand lane.
Police are currently investigating the incident, and initial indications suggest a possible tyre burst as the cause. The man was taken to the hospital shortly after the accident and sustained severe injuries.
Repairs to the barrier and bridge barrier are ongoing, and it is expected that these repairs will be completed by the end of the day. For further inquiries, contact the South East Hesse Police Headquarters - Press Office.
The estimated total damage from the accident is around €200,000.
