Multiple casualties reported following a catastrophic pile-up at the culmination of a cycling competition
In the picturesque town of Bad Dürrheim, Baden-Württemberg, the "Riderman" road cycling race was marred by two mass pile-ups on Sunday, resulting in dozens of participants being injured.
The first incident occurred around 11:30 a.m., with a congestion on the left side of the road during a left turn causing the pile-up. The second mass pile-up followed due to the resulting backlog.
According to reports, around 15 to 20 seriously injured participants were taken to hospitals, along with another 20 to 25 with minor injuries. An additional 35 participants received on-site treatment.
The police, who are currently investigating the incidents, have ruled out any external influence on the race. Four rescue helicopters, numerous ambulances, and personnel were on-site to attend to the injured.
The "Riderman" cycling race, which took place from September 5th to 7th, was organised by the team led by Rik Sauser, closely associated with Team Strassacker. They manage the event's professional organisation, including route security, logistics, and coordination.
All ongoing and planned race events were cancelled by the organiser following the incidents. The affected roads were closed to public traffic for the event.
No further details about the cause of the accidents have been provided, and no information about the current condition of the injured participants is available. The police investigation is ongoing.
Initially scheduled for around 1200 participants over Saturday and Sunday, the turnout for the race is currently unknown. The organisers have not yet announced if or when the race will be rescheduled.
