Mumbai Experiences Yellow Alert on August 31 in Thane and Navi Mumbai; Konkan Districts Anticipate Heavy Rainfall until September 3
Monsoon Activity to Intensify in Western India
A low-pressure area developing in the north Bay of Bengal is expected to strengthen, potentially marking the beginning of another strong spell of monsoon activity across western India. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), this could trigger heavier rainfall across Konkan, central Maharashtra, and Mumbai by September 2-3.
Residents in Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai are currently experiencing monsoon showers on August 31, 2023. Intermittent rain is expected throughout the day, with occasional spells of heavier showers in the afternoon. Temperatures are forecast to stay between 25 °C and 30 °C.
Meteorologists from the IMD have urged residents of Mumbai and the Konkan coast to closely monitor IMD updates, protect themselves against heavy rainfall, and avoid unnecessary travel in high-risk areas. In Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall at several locations.
Light to moderate winds moving at around 15-20 km/h are expected in Mumbai. Coastal areas in Mumbai may see water levels rise during high tide, but the risk of flooding remains limited. Fishermen in these districts have been cautioned against venturing into the waters, and residents in low-lying coastal regions have been asked to remain alert.
In rural and hilly stretches, local transport and routine activities could face disruption. Winds in these districts are expected to reach 25-35 km/h. Precautions against heavy showers should be taken, and unnecessary travel in high-risk zones should be avoided.
The IMD has issued a yellow watch for heavy rainfall in Mumbai. The upcoming surge in monsoon currents calls for continued vigilance in Mumbai and along the Konkan coast. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest IMD updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this period.
