Music artist Jack White is reportedly selling a portion of his music catalog to Sony Music, according to an exclusive report.

Jack White Sells Majority Stake in Music Catalog to Sony Music

Renowned musician Jack White has sold a majority stake of approximately 70% of his music catalog to Sony Music, according to a source familiar with the matter. The sale does not encompass any future recordings from White.

The deal, which closed earlier this summer, includes rights from White's recordings across his career, including his work with The White Stripes, his solo career, The Raconteurs, and The Dead Weather. The White Stripes, one of the most influential bands of the 2000s, released six albums, including the much-lauded White Blood Cells and Elephant. With the Raconteurs, White had hits with tracks like "Steady, As She Goes," and their albums Consolers of the Lonely and Broken Boy Soldiers were both nominated for the Grammy for best rock album. White dropped his sixth solo album, No Name, last year as a surprise release and earned a Grammy nomination for best rock album.

White, a trendsetter in the music business, having been one of the earlier artists to take control of his recorded catalog through Third Man Records, maintains control of his recordings, according to the source.

The White Stripes, who will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this November, won six Grammys from 2004 through 2011, and their biggest song, "Seven Nation Army," went double-platinum. All three of the Dead Weather's albums debuted in the Top 10 on the Billboard chart.

Sony Music has previously acquired Bruce Springsteen's recording and publishing catalogs, Bob Dylan's recorded catalog, and publishing company Hipgnosis Songs Group. This is not the first time White and Sony have done business together; Sony's flagship record label Columbia had signed White for a solo record deal back in 2012.

Representatives for Sony Music and Jack White did not respond to requests for comment on the matter. The amount White has sold and the amount Sony is paying for its stake are not clear.

With this sale, White joins a growing list of artists who have sold their music catalogs to major labels in recent years, including Neil Young, Paul McCartney, and JAY-Z.
