Music titan Quincy Jones, acclaimed trailblazer of multiple genres, passes away at 91 years old.
Quincy Delight Jones Jr., a groundbreaking figure in the music industry, was born on 14 March 1933 in Chicago. His career spanned seven decades, crossing various musical genres and leaving an indelible mark on the world of music.
Jones' early life was as diverse as his career. His father, Quincy Jones Sr., was a semi-professional baseball player and a carpenter, while his mother, Sarah Frances, was a bank officer and an apartment manager.
In the 1950s, Jones moved to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger, a prominent music educator. During his time in the city, he immersed himself in the post-war classical music scene and rubbed shoulders with Pablo Picasso. He also saw Igor Stravinsky every day during his studies with Boulanger in 1957.
Later, Jones studied with Olivier Messiaen, an avant-garde composer, further broadening his musical horizons. This eclectic education laid the foundation for his distinctive sound world, marked by lush strings, catchy melodies, and cutting-edge production techniques.
Throughout his career, Jones collaborated with numerous notable figures such as Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Donna Summer, and Michael Jackson. He also wrote over 30 film scores, including the iconic theme tune for Austin Powers, 'Soul Bossa Nova', and the score for The Italian Job.
In addition to his collaborations with pop stars, Jones mentored cross-genre phenomenon Jacob Collier. The artist with whom he was connected as a mentor figure in his later years and who is considered Jones' bridge between two worlds is Bob Dylan.
Jones gained a reputation as a highly skilled and versatile composer and arranger. He remarked that Brahms, Bach, and Beethoven had the same 12 notes as he does, showcasing his deep understanding of music.
In 2008, Jones served as the artistic advisor for the Beijing Olympics. His career involved work in various fields, including film scoring, and he spoke 26 languages, reflecting his global influence.
Sadly, Quincy Jones, a significant figure in music for over 50 years, has died at the age of 91. His legacy will continue to inspire musicians and music lovers for generations to come.
