My Chemical Romance spent five years crafting and shaping the meaning of their iconic rock anthem, Welcome To The Black Parade
My Chemical Romance's "Welcome To The Black Parade": A Rock Masterpiece in the Making
In 2006, My Chemical Romance released their third full-length album, "The Black Parade". The title track, "Welcome To The Black Parade", was more than just a songβit was a testament to their artistic growth and ambition.
The song, which went on to top the UK charts, was a labour of love for the band. According to guitarist Ray Toro, they aimed to create a genre-crossing masterpiece akin to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody. Toro said of the track, "It's been a part of this band for five years, and it took that long to really finish the song and define what it truly was about."
"Welcome To The Black Parade" is a concept album centre around the story of a dying man known as 'The Patient'. Singer Gerard Way compared the album to Pink Floyd's The Wall in terms of alienation and claiming one's destiny. The lead single, with its melody written collaboratively by the band members, is about destiny and asking what individuals will become.
The song's opening section features piano, marching band-style snare rolls, and orchestrations arranged by David Campbell. A little under two minutes into the song, the quintet break into an up-tempo, palm-muted punk rock verse. Lead guitarist Ray Toro's playing style in the track has been compared to Queen legend Brian May.
The recording sessions for "The Black Parade" took place at Eldorado Studios in Burbank, a historic studio that has given birth to classic albums for Alice In Chains, The Offspring, and Slayer. Rhythm guitarist Frank Iero's tracks for the album were most likely recorded with the same JCM800 belonging to the producer.
The video for "Welcome To The Black Parade", directed by Samuel Bayer, a cinematographer who got his big break working with Nirvana on their legendary Smells Like Teen Spirit video, further cemented My Chemical Romance's stature as modern torchbearers of rock 'n' roll. In the video, Toro can be seen holding an Epiphone Sheraton II, but the band recorded the album with their touring gear.
The release of "Welcome To The Black Parade" catapulted My Chemical Romance into the higher echelons of alternative rock. Already a significant name in the emo and punk world, the band's third album marked a new chapter in their career, solidifying their place as a force to be reckoned with in the world of rock music.
