Namibian soccer star, Shalulile, matches South African goal-scoring mark
In the ongoing Premier Soccer League (PSL) season, two teams, Kaizer Chiefs and Sekhukhune United, are chasing a first league title since 2015, with both teams currently holding nine points each. Kaizer Chiefs secured their win against bottom club Richards Bay, while Sekhukhune United triumphed over promoted Orbit College.
During the match against Richards Bay, Gaston Sirino scored for Kaizer Chiefs on the 57th minute, and the home side went behind against Polokwane City on the 73rd minute when Jayden Adams scored after a goalmouth scramble following a corner.
Meanwhile, Peter Shalulie, a 31-year-old forward for Sundowns, has made a significant impact in the league. He previously played for Highlands Park and joined Sundowns five years ago. In a recent match against Polokwane City, Shalulie scored a goal outside the penalty area, equaling the league and cup goals record held by retired Kaizer Chiefs star Siyabonga Nomvethe in the PSL, established in 1996. He aims to surpass this record this season, with a personal target of 25 goals, as Sundowns strive for a record-extending ninth straight league title.
Sundowns secured their victory in the 87th minute with a counterattack, culminating in Shalulie beating the veteran Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze with a low shot into the corner of the net. Sekhukhune United, the current league leaders, won 3-0 against Orbit College, with Vusimuzi Mncube scoring a brace.
It's worth noting that Sekhukhune United are based in Johannesburg but play home fixtures 325 kilometres (200 miles) away in Polokwane. Richards Bay, the bottom club in the PSL, is yet to secure a win this season.
The first prize for the winner of the PSL is 20 million rand ($1.131mn/€970,000). The league is heating up, and the upcoming match between Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns on August 27 promises to be a thrilling encounter in the fourth round of the PSL.
