NASA introduces Orion mission control center for lunar flight of Artemis 2 astronauts (images included)
The Artemis program, marking the first crewed mission to the moon since Apollo 17, is gearing up for a significant milestone. Twenty-five finalists have been chosen for the Artemis 2 'zero-g indicator' competition, signalling the impending launch of the mission.
The Artemis 2 mission will be the first crewed flight test of the Orion capsule, NASA's first-ever crewed flight test. This mission aims to send astronauts around the moon aboard the Orion capsule, setting the standard for the Artemis program, including Artemis 3 and beyond.
NASA has selected astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen as the Artemis 2 crew. The mission is targeted for no earlier than February 2026 with a mission window extending through April.
As the launch date approaches, the new facility at NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC)—the Mission Evaluation Room (MER)—is opening its doors. The MER will be staffed by people from NASA, Lockheed Martin, the European Space Agency (ESA), and Airbus, each responsible for a different part of the Orion capsule's manufacturing.
The MER's primary function is to prepare and evaluate mission procedures and support astronaut activities during the mission. It will also capture detailed mission data that will feed into planning for Artemis 3 and beyond. The MER will be crucial for monitoring the breadth of Orion's systems and ensuring the crew's safety.
Moreover, the MER will provide in-depth data analyses of Orion to augment in-flight operations. It will also serve as a testing ground for the partnership between NASA's Mission Control and the MER. The Orion Mission Evaluation Room at NASA's JSC in Houston involves NASA and its partners who monitor and support the Artemis 2 mission by simulating mission operations and ensuring real-time communication between astronauts and ground control teams.
The MER will feature 24 console stations staffed 24/7 during the Artemis 2 mission. This facility will be instrumental in the success of the Artemis 2 mission, paving the way for a sustained presence on the lunar surface as a staging ground for eventual crewed missions to Mars—the ultimate goal of the Artemis program.
NASA's Artemis 2 Orion capsule is fuelling up and moving closer to launch, promising an exciting new chapter in human space exploration. The world eagerly awaits the next giant leap for mankind.
