Navigating the professional landscape with Penn's VP of Business Operations

In the heart of Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) has welcomed a new addition to its leadership team. Michael Scales, who previously held positions at Temple University and Drexel University, joined Penn University as the Associate Vice President of Business Services in June 2024.

Scales approaches his role at Penn as an "anthropologist," viewing campus environments as organic and constantly evolving organisms. He spends his days immersed in the university's vibrant community, visiting various parts of the campus, from architecture and landscaping to residence halls and dining spaces. This hands-on approach allows him to observe student interactions and gain a deeper understanding of the campus's needs.

One of Scales's first initiatives at Penn was the creation of an AI Working Group. This team will pilot AI tools aimed at enhancing the experiences of students, staff, and the broader community. The AI Working Group reflects the division's commitment to broad, meaningful impact and keeping up with technological advancements.

Business Services at Penn University encompasses a wide range of services, including 13 College Houses, 14 dining locations, Penn Children's Center, hotels, the Morris Arboretum, Penn Bookstore, PennCard services, and commuter transit, among others. Two active renovations of Penn hotels are being overseen by Scales and his team: the Sheraton University City and the Hilton Inn at Penn.

One of the most significant ongoing projects within Business Services is the renovation of the 1920 Commons, which is in the early design phases for a renovation aimed at enhancing students' dining experience. The Quad is also undergoing its third and final phase of renovations.

Scales became interested in the job at Penn University after walking through its campus during the 2023 Move-In. He was captivated by the university's intellectually curious atmosphere and its commitment to providing a high-quality and consistent experience for members of the Penn community in a financially responsible way.

In addition to his role at Penn, Scales has a genuine passion for campus environments and visits local campuses wherever he travels. He spends time at Morris Arboretum & Gardens, which is part of his portfolio in Business Services.

Scales is spearheading a series of strategic initiatives, including an environmental assessment of Penn Transit, part of Penn's broader climate commitments under the Penn Climate and Sustainability Action Plan 4.0. Being embedded in the physical environment is part of Scales's job, and he describes himself as "never one to run away from a challenge."
