NBA insiders suggest that the Detroit Pistons are considering pursuing a potential trade for Lauri Markkanen, who is currently with the Utah Jazz.

The Detroit Pistons are reportedly eyeing a trade for Lauri Markkanen, the former first-round pick and one-time all-star power forward currently playing for the Utah Jazz.

Markkanen, entering his 9th professional season in 2025-26, has shown impressive form at EuroBasket 2025, averaging 25+ points and at least eight rebounds per game. NBA insider Zach Lowe considers this performance a positive sign heading into the upcoming season.

However, Markkanen's scoring average dropped to 19.0 points per game in the 2024-25 season with the Jazz. While still a solid contribution, Zach Lowe stated that Markkanen needs to improve his production next season for the Pistons to be fully convinced in a trade.

The Jazz, who parted ways with John Collins and Collin Sexton this offseason, are reportedly in a position to make a trade. However, to acquire Markkanen, the Pistons might have to trade several key players and draft capital. According to reports, the proposed deal would see Tobias Harris, Isaiah Stewart, Ron Holland, Marcus Sasser, and two first-round picks (one in 2026 and one in 2027) traded to the Jazz in exchange for Markkanen.

The Pistons' interest in Markkanen is not without reason. Markkanen's ability to move and score the ball makes him an elite addition to the Pistons' roster. In Utah, he has averaged 23.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. Moreover, Markkanen has started all 168 games he's played in for the Jazz, solidifying his position as far and away Utah's top player.

However, the Jazz must have a poor record through the first two to three months of the 2025-26 season for the Pistons to make a move. There is speculation that the Jazz struggled to start the 2025-26 season, which could pave the way for a potential trade.

If the trade goes through, the Pistons are expected to reap significant benefits from Markkanen's presence. Zach Lowe even predicts that Markkanen will be one of the hottest names on the trade market in a few months.

As the 2025-26 season approaches, the potential trade of Lauri Markkanen from the Utah Jazz to the Detroit Pistons continues to be a topic of discussion among NBA fans and insiders alike. Only time will tell if this trade will indeed materialize and how it will impact both teams' performances in the upcoming season.
