Marcus Morris Sr. Faces Felony Check Fraud Charges in Nevada

NBA veteran Marcus Morris Sr. found himself embroiled in a legal controversy this summer. The Philadelphia native, who played for several teams including the Philadelphia 76ers and Boston Celtics, is currently facing felony charges of check fraud and theft in Nevada.

The charges stemmed specifically from two bad checks written to the MGM Grand and Wynn Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. Morris obtained $115,000 in casino markers from MGM Grand and a similar amount from Wynn, but failed to repay the debts when the checks bounced. This led to felony charges of drawing or passing a check for $1,200 or more with intent to defraud and theft valued at more than $100,000.

On July 27, 2025, Morris was arrested at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport in Florida. He was held without bail while awaiting extradition to Nevada. After about two days in custody, Morris was released on bond.

In a now-deleted Instagram post, Morris addressed the incident, claiming he was held without bail, food, or water for over 50 hours. He stated that he did not know casino markers counted as checks and denied writing any fraudulent checks. Morris acknowledged delayed repayment but denied criminal intent or fraud.

Morris' agent, Yony Noy, indicated that the debts were not due to fraud, but rather an outstanding marker with a casino. Noy posted on social media that the situation was due to an outstanding marker with a casino.

Morris played 13 seasons in the NBA from 2011 to 2024, averaging 12 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 26.6 minutes per contest. He shot 43.5% from the field and 77.4% from the foul line during his NBA career.

This is not the first time Morris has faced legal issues. In 2012, he was charged with battery, but was acquitted of the charges in 2015.

Morris' twin brother, Markieff, downplayed the felony charge in a post on July 27, expressing concern about the embarrassment caused by the arrest at the airport.

As of late July 2025, Morris remains in custody in Florida awaiting extradition to Nevada. He has not been mentioned in any recent NBA news.
