Neighborhood Rivalry intensifies: Beechwood takes initial lead against CovCath in the 35th District finals
Beechwood Claims 35th District Championship with 8-4 Win over CovCath
In a thrilling game played in front of a standing room only crowd in Ft. Mitchell, Beechwood's pitcher, Chase Flaherty, led his team to an 8-4 victory over Covington Catholic, earning him the District MVP award.
The game started with a bang as Beechwood scored the first run in the first inning with a double from sophomore Tyler Fryman. The scoreline of the game was CovCath 4, Beechwood 8, with CovCath being limited to five hits and four runs.
Flaherty (7-1) was the winning pitcher, while W. McEvoy (5-2) took the loss for CovCath. Beechwood's key player, Fryman, is considered a candidate for Ninth Region Player of the Year.
CovCath's shortstop, Jackson Reardon, returned to the game after missing the entire season due to a lower back stress fracture. Reardon's return could potentially lead to a rematch between Beechwood and Covington Catholic in the regional finals. Reardon has been a force to reckon with, hitting three home runs in his 13 at-bats since returning to the game. Dixie Heights Coach Chris Maxwell described Reardon as a "one-man wrecking crew."
Reardon's performance earned him a spot on the All-35th District Team. He will attend Purdue University next year.
The 35th District championship baseball game between Beechwood and Covington Catholic is an annual event that is a "must-see" for neighbors who live 2.4 miles apart on Dixte Highway. CovCath was forced to use five pitchers in the game, with Marcus Suwinski pitching twice.
This win marks a significant milestone for Beechwood, who will now look forward to the regional finals with confidence. The team will be hoping to continue their winning streak and bring home the regional title.
