In an unprecedented move for streaming giants, Netflix has achieved its first-ever box office win with the animated K-pop spectacle KPop Demon Hunters. Over the August 23-24 weekend, the film earned an estimated $18 million in ticket sales, making it one of the summer's most unexpected cultural phenomena.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters centres around a K-pop trio named Huntr/x who moonlight as demon hunters. The film, which screened in about 1,750 theaters worldwide, has captivated audiences with its blend of K-pop energy, mythology, and dazzling visuals.

Theaters responded to the demand for KPop Demon Hunters by adding extra capacity on demand. However, AMC, North America's largest theater chain, refused to play the film. Despite this, the film's success is evident in its impressive earnings, surpassing the $100 million global mark, a feat achieved by Zach Cregger's horror smash "Weapons" in its third weekend.

"Weapons" earned $15.6 million, but KPop Demon Hunters's success extends beyond just dollar signs. For the film industry, these summer weekends matter more than just numbers, as they generate goodwill and positive moviegoing experiences.

David A. Gross of FranchiseRe described KPop Demon Hunters as a "completely unique two-day musical event". Cinemas transformed into buzzing concert halls during the sing-along screenings of KPop Demon Hunters, a move that Netflix leaned into to enhance the big-screen experience.

The members of Huntr/x are Rumi, Mira, and Zooey. Some rival studios suggest the ticket sales for KPop Demon Hunters could reach as high as $20 million. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore stated that the goodwill generated might be a more important metric than just bottom-line dollars and cents.

Disney's "Freakier Friday" also made an appearance in the box office, earning $9.2 million. Meanwhile, "The Fantastic Four: First Steps" continued its gradual decline with $5.9 million.

In conclusion, KPop Demon Hunters has proven to be a game-changer in the film industry, demonstrating the potential of streaming services in the box office and captivating audiences with its unique blend of K-pop, mythology, and visual spectacle.
