Eureka Casino Resort's Community-Focused Literacy Program
Nevada: Eureka Casino Resort Finances Summer Reading Initiative
In the sun-kissed town of Mesquite, Nevada, Eureka Casino Resort isn't just about rolling the dice; it's about shaping the future. Recently, the resort has partnered with the local J.L. Bowler Elementary School to sponsor the 11-year-old Mesquite Reads program.
Aimed at nurturing young minds and igniting a passion for reading, Mesquite Reads has grown from a small initiative to a cornerstone of community education. This year, the program will serve over 100 students from kindergarten to fourth grade, a testament to its success and growth.
"At Eureka, our mission transcends the casino floor. Education is a priority," says Andre Carrier, CEO of Eureka Casino Resort, underscoring the resort's commitment to the community's next generation. "Mesquite Reads embodies the essence of our values - collaboration, service, and a belief in the potential of our youth."
The program's four-week summer session, running from May 27 to June 18, is designed to spark excitement about learning. Classes consist of small groups of 10 to 15 students, ensuring personalized attention. Each day kicks off with a nutritious breakfast and outdoor activities before diving into focused literacy sessions.
Younger students hone their sight words, fluency, and reading comprehension skills, while older students explore storytelling & writing. The curriculum also includes individualized math instruction and special activities, such as loom-knitting hats for NICU babies.
Learning doesn't stop at classrooms. Every Thursday, during the summer session, children engage in Super Summer School Spaghetti Thursdays. Eureka employee-owners and community partners step up to serve mouth-watering spaghetti and meatballs, fostering a sense of community and togetherness.
The program doesn't just focus on better grades; it's about creating brighter futures. As Gerri Chasko, Director of Eureka Community Initiative, eloquently puts it, "We not only want better grades but also a better future for every child."
Eureka Casino Resort's philanthropic spirit doesn't stop at Mesquite Reads. The resort, established in 1997 and 100% employee-owned since 2015, supports over 50 community programs, including education, outreach, economic development, and citizenship initiatives.
"Our employees are not just workers; they're invested members of this town," says Carrier. "Programs like Mesquite Reads resonate with us on a deeper level because we see our children benefiting."
The Eureka Community Initiative, rooted in the company's hometown values, has supported Mesquite Reads since its inception. With over $291,488 donated to the program since 2014, ECI has helped distribute over 4,000 free books through community events.
The future looks bright for the Mesquite Reads program, with a focus on expansion, sustainability, and continued improvement in literacy outcomes. As Eureka Casino Resort stands steadfast in its commitment to community development and education, we can't help but feel optimistic about what the future holds.
