New addition to Michter's Toasted Barrel Finish series: a fresh whiskey joins the lineup.
Michter's, a leading distillery in the production of toasted barrel-finished whiskeys, has expanded its Toasted Barrel Finish series with the release of the US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash Whiskey. This new expression was introduced to the American market in September 2025.
Since the launch of their Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon in 2014, Michter's has been at the forefront of the toasted barrel-finished whiskey trend. They have since extended this process to their rye whiskey and, starting in 2019, their Sour Mash Whiskey.
The Sour Mash Whiskey is initially matured in new charred oak barrels before being transferred to toasted, un-charred barrels for a secondary maturation. This unique process gives the whiskey a distinct flavour profile, deepening the rich honey, burnt sugar, and citrus spice notes with smoky vanilla reminiscent of a cozy campfire.
Interestingly, the Sour Mash Whiskey does not qualify as a bourbon or rye because it lacks the minimum required 51 percent of corn or rye grain in the mashbill. The term "sour mash" refers to a whiskey made using spent fermented grains from a previous distillation to maintain consistency, as opposed to sweet mash, which involves an entirely new fermentation and distillation.
Joseph J. Magliocco, Michter's president, stated that the release of their Toasted Barrel Finish Bourbon in 2014 put the toasted, un-charred barrel finish category on the map.
The US*1 Toasted Barrel Finish Sour Mash Whiskey (SRP $110) will be available starting this month at retailers around the U.S. The Michter's lineup can be found now at websites like ReserveBar.
Other brands and distilleries releasing toasted barrel-finished whiskeys include Elijah Craig, Barrell Bourbon, Jack Daniel's, and MGP's Penelope Bourbon. The process of sour mash is commonly used in American whiskey.
Jonah Flicker, the whiskey critic for a leading website, has yet to review the new expression. As with any new release, expectations are high for this unique twist on the toasted barrel finish trend.
