New certification program for regenerative agriculture unveiled by Rainforest Alliance

The Rainforest Alliance, an international non-profit organisation, has announced the launch of a new Regenerative Agriculture Certification. This certification aims to support coffee farmers while restoring ecosystems in tropical regions.

The unique seal, which signifies products meeting the requirements of the Regenerative Agriculture Standard, will help shoppers identify products from farms and companies dedicated to improving soil health and rural livelihoods. The Rainforest Alliance's "little green frog" certification seal, already present on over 40,000 products, will now include this new regenerative seal. Brands like Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, Lipton, and Nestlé source through Rainforest Alliance.

The Regenerative Agriculture Standard includes practices to improve and restore ecosystems, build soil health and fertility, reduce emissions, enhance watershed management, increase biodiversity, and improve farmers' livelihoods. The standard is already being applied on farms in Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Nicaragua, and the organisation plans to extend it to cocoa, citrus, and tea by 2026.

The Rainforest Alliance operates in 62 countries and partnered with nearly 8 million farmers and over 7,850 businesses in 2024. Independent audits will confirm compliance before farms and companies can display the regenerative seal.

Volatile weather patterns, soil degradation, and market instability continue to threaten harvests and undermine the income of coffee growers, particularly smallholders, who are responsible for over 70% of global production. The new certification offers a way for companies to bolster supply chain resilience, improve ESG performance, and answer growing consumer demand for credible sustainability labels.

Consumers will be able to choose products that deliver measurable benefits to both people and the planet with the new certification. The Rainforest Alliance aims to reach 100 million farmers and workers by 2030. The first certified products under the Regenerative Agriculture Certification are expected in stores in 2026. Santiago Gowland, CEO of the Rainforest Alliance, stated that the organisation is proud to introduce this certification to drive a shift towards a new model of agriculture.
