New season introduces a prize-winning commencement at the State Chapel

The Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden is set to begin its 2025/26 concert season with a grand event, featuring Gustav Mahler's First Symphony and other compositions from his diverse repertoire. The opening concert, conducted by Chief Conductor Daniele Gatti, will take place on August 29, 2025, at the Dresden Kulturpalast.

The concert will mark the continuation of the Dresden Mahler cycle, which began last season with a focus on Mahler's "Wunderhorn years." During this period, Mahler combined symphonic and song-like elements, creating a unique blend of orchestral and vocal music.

The programme for the opening concert will also include Mahler's compositions from his "Vienna years," a period that refers to his time as director of the Vienna Court Opera. Notable among these is Mahler's Fifth Symphony, which marks his return to purely instrumental form.

Joining the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden will be the Dresden Philharmonic, conducted by Tabita Berglund, and soloist Truls Mørk. The concert will also feature the "Rückert-Lieder" interpreted by mezzo-soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux.

In addition to Mahler's works, Daniele Gatti will also combine the "Requiem" by Tōru Takemitsu in the concert, adding an extra layer of depth and complexity to the performance.

The second season of the Dresden Mahler cycle promises to illuminate Mahler's compositions from his "Vienna years," providing audiences with a deeper understanding of this influential composer's work.

Mark your calendars for August 29, 2025, and be a part of this exciting musical journey with the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden.
