New Sixth Form Centre Opens in La Mare de Carteret

The La Mare de Carteret Sixth Form Centre has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone in the education sector of Guernsey. This temporary facility, expected to house at least year groups of teenagers studying for their A-levels and the International Baccalaureate, has been the result of a collaborative effort involving over 40 organizations and individuals.

The former High School, which started life as a 'temporary' Secondary School in the 1970s, has undergone a remarkable transformation, thanks to the dedication of volunteers, local artists, and various local government bodies. The outside learning facilities have been given a fresh look, with the courtyard receiving a facelift, complete with benches donated by CLIP.

Inside, the former gym has been repurposed as a multi-purpose room, now used for exams, teacher briefings, and student gatherings. The school's Assembly Hall now serves as a place for senior students to gather, sit, eat, and relax.

The new environment has been warmly received by students. Evie Le Prevost, a student studying the International Baccalaureate, finds the new environment more grown-up and conducive to her post-16 education. Another student, Joe Ward, studying A-Levels, shares similar sentiments, expressing his belief that the Sixth Form Centre is well-placed to help him achieve his educational goals due to the broad range of teachers and supportive environment.

Kieran James, the Head of Guernsey's Sixth Form, was pleased with the results and the reception from students on day one. He expressed his satisfaction with the contributions made by key individuals such as education officials and local leaders, as well as educational authorities and community organizations, which were instrumental in transforming the former La Mare de Carteret school into a Sixth Form Centre.

Despite its temporary status, the Sixth Form Centre at La Mare de Carteret will offer permanent education, providing a much-needed solution to the ongoing debates about the number of schools needed and whether it should be rebuilt or not. Many of the improvements and facilities at the Sixth Form Centre will be moved to the final destination, ensuring a smooth transition for students in the future.
