New track and regional station construction scheduled for Köpenick station, set to be completed by 2027.
In the heart of southeastern Berlin, the modernization of Köpenick Station is underway, marking a significant step in the larger project, i2030, which aims to expand the Berlin-Frankfurt (Oder) line. This extensive renovation is being managed by DB InfraGO, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn, responsible for infrastructure projects.
The modernization includes the construction of a new 220-meter-long regional platform with three accesses, barrier-free elevators, and a connection to the Berlin outer ring. This will accommodate an estimated average of 5,500 entries and exits per day, a number expected to increase significantly during major events at the Stadion An der Alten Försterei.
Several construction sites are being handled simultaneously, making the project complex. Four new railway crossings and approximately four kilometers of noise barriers are part of the project. Some of these noise barriers are designed in the colours of 1. FC Union, adding a touch of local flavour to the modernization.
The old bridge parts on the eastern side of the station have been replaced with a new construction, and an additional track is being built on the Forum Köpenick side, parallel to the existing S-Bahn tracks, to accommodate regional traffic. The tram stops will remain in front of Forum Köpenick, as they cannot be moved under the bridge.
Preparations for the additional track are being made on Bahnhofstraße, visibly advancing the construction. The passage under the station bridge remains a bottleneck and will not accommodate additional lanes. As a result, the modernization means significant restrictions for road and rail traffic, with repeated closures on the S-Bahn line S3 and partial closures of Bahnhofstraße.
The building measures also include widening the station building towards Elcknerplatz. A new pedestrian underpass at Stellingdamm and a western entrance will be constructed, while a pedestrian bridge over Bahnhofstraße will facilitate access and reduce conflicts between pedestrians and road traffic. Additionally, a pedestrian underpass at Stellingdamm and a western entrance are being constructed.
Deutsche Bahn is responsible for the modernization of the existing S-Bahn station on behalf of the state of Berlin to connect it to the Regional Express Line RE1. The western side of the station will also undergo bridge replacement in future construction phases.
The goal of the modernization is to improve accessibility for commuters and strengthen connections between Berlin and Brandenburg. The modernization is expected to be completed by July 2027, resulting in significant changes to the cityscape and long-lasting restrictions for traffic and residents.
