New Zealand-based neo-Nazi ringleader denies bail amid allegations of involvement in assault charges at a camp
In a dramatic turn of events, Thomas Sewell, a notorious neo-Nazi activist, was refused bail on Wednesday following his arrest over an alleged attack on the Aboriginal protest site, Camp Sovereignty, in Melbourne's city centre.
The clash between a group of men and people at Camp Sovereignty occurred following the March for Australia rally in Melbourne's CBD. According to reports, a group led by Sewell, approximately 30 men in black, allegedly stormed the Indigenous camp on Sunday evening.
The incident resulted in injuries to three individuals, with the most severe injury being a woman requiring staples in her scalp. Victoria Police opposed Sewell's application for bail, citing his escalating violence as a risk to society.
Thomas Sewell, a 32-year-old New Zealand-born Australian, is known for his far-right activism, violent acts, and promotion of National Socialism. He has led groups like the National Socialist Network, European Australian Movement, and founded the Lads Society. Outside Australia, he attempted to recruit Brenton Tarrant, the Christchurch mosque shooter, in 2017.
Sewell has been involved in multiple violent incidents and legal charges, including attacks in Victoria and at a First Nations protest camp in Melbourne. His lawyer, Mathew Hopkins, stated that his client had never missed a court hearing and also mentioned that Sewell is committed to fighting all charges.
However, Judge Bakos refused Sewell's bail application, citing an unacceptable risk of him endangering the community. Sewell spent the night behind bars following his arrest outside the court. He was charged with 25 offenses, including violent disorder and affray.
The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, has confirmed Sewell's neo-Nazi status. Sewell's actions serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against hate and intolerance in our society. As the legal proceedings continue, it is hoped that justice will be served, and such incidents will be prevented in the future.
