Newly Introduced Road Signs in Spain: Highlighting the Five You'll Encounter Initially - and the Controversial One That's Stirring Debate
In a significant move towards improving road safety and promoting sustainable mobility, Spain has embarked on the biggest signage refresh since 2003. The new traffic sign regulation, effective since July 1, 2025, aims to replace outdated rules with smaller, more resource-efficient signs that also embrace gender equality.
The changes are not limited to vertical signage alone. They extend to signals from officers, variable/circumstantial signs, traffic lights, and beaconing. This comprehensive overhaul is expected to gradually roll out across mainland Spain and Mallorca, with a smooth transition period.
One of the key additions is the symbol P-21b, which warns drivers of vulnerable pedestrians ahead, such as near special schools, clinics, or care homes. Another new symbol, P-35, alerts drivers to weaving sections between a merge and a split, a common cause of rear-end shunts.
The new symbol S-1c indicates the start of a 2+1 road, where the center lane alternates by direction to offer safer overtaking windows. Drivers are advised to check the overheads when they see the blue S-1c symbol and only use the center lane if it is designated for their direction.
The rise of electric vehicles, e-scooters, adaptive cruise control, and busier junctions has necessitated new symbols to help drivers navigate the evolving road conditions. A new symbol, R-118, bans e-scooters (VMP) in certain areas, such as promenades, tunnels, or busy pedestrian zones. E-scooter riders are warned to watch for the R-118 ban plate and reroute, as fines apply for not complying with the ban.
Several legacy works/beaconing plates are being updated for better visibility and consistency. The symbols S-21.1 and S-21.2 (mountain pass/winter transitability) are no longer in use, as conditions now appear on variable message signs and apps. Fresh icons for electric charging points, fuel stations with LPG, and motorhome waste-water disposal have been introduced.
The classic service-area symbol on motorways (S-127) is being replaced with updated service icons. The new symbol, S-1c, indicates the start of a 2+1 road, while the changes affect all aspects of road signage to ensure drivers can read the road with confidence and avoid the surprises that have been causing online grumbles.
Drivers are advised to slow early and give space when they see P-21b, and leave room when they encounter the new symbol P-35, which alerts them to weaving sections between a merge and a split. Learning these new symbols can help drivers navigate the roads with ease and avoid the surprises that have been causing online grumbles.
The sign changes are rolling out on new road projects from July 1, with existing signs to be replaced over time. The reform also allows the Spanish traffic ministry to more quickly update traffic signs through ministerial orders, with the next changes expected not to take another 22 years. The new signs will be incorporated into driving tests in the coming months, ensuring that all drivers are well-equipped to navigate Spain's roads safely and confidently.
