In the heart of West Germany, the University of Applied Sciences for Police and Administration NRW is welcoming a new cohort of students pursuing a higher education diploma in "Economics and Administration with a focus on Police Service." This unique program, part of the statewide "NEXT LEVEL Police" initiative, offers an alternative route to a career in the police force without requiring vocational A-levels.

The Recklinghausen Police Department, led by Christian Sommer, Head of the Directorate of Hazard Prevention/Operations, is the training ground for these aspiring officers. On August 27, 2022, Police President Friederike Zurhausen swore in 29 new students at Kuniberg College in Recklinghausen, marking the start of their journey.

The role of the police, according to Zurhausen, is multi-faceted. It involves protecting society, maintaining law and order, and upholding democratic values. This understanding is central to the training these students receive, with a focus on actively living democratic values to protect and preserve a liberal-democratic society.

The students will undergo a year of alternating school training and practical phases with the police, followed by a purely academic second year. This blend of theoretical and practical learning is designed to prepare them for the challenges they will face in their future roles.

The "NEXT LEVEL" program, which started in 2022 with 11 locations, expanded to 15 locations in August 2023. The program welcomed its first police commissioners in July 2023.

It's important to note that after completing the two-year program, students will have a significant head start in knowledge compared to students who switch directly to university after A-levels. This program is an exciting opportunity for those interested in a career in policing and administration, offering a comprehensive education in the field.
