NHL Postseason Competition Intensifies

In the final stretch of the 2024 regular season, the Holy Cross Men's Ice Hockey team is making headlines. The team is currently preparing for a faceoff against the United States Air Force Academy, but the focus is not just on the game.

Liam McLinskey, a junior on the team, has been named a finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Award. This annual award is given to the top NCAA hockey player, and McLinskey's nomination is a testament to his exceptional skills on the ice.

Liam is not the only Holy Cross player in the running for this prestigious award. Seniors Thomas Gale and McLinskey have both been nominated, a significant achievement for the team.

The Holy Cross Men's Ice Hockey team has a rich history, and recently, it added a new milestone. Patrick Rissmiller '02 had his jersey retired by the team, making him the first player in Holy Cross history to receive this honour. The ceremony took place before a faceoff against the United States Air Force Academy on January 3, 2024.

Meanwhile, in other parts of the National Hockey League, the competition is fierce. The Dallas Stars have clinched the top spot in the Western Conference, while the Tampa Bay Lightning have secured a wild card seed for the Eastern Conference in the Atlantic Division. The Atlantic Division itself is highly competitive, with the Boston Bruins leading the way. The Bruins have had a strong season after rebuilding from last year's embarrassment under new Captain Brad Marchand.

The Florida Panthers and the Toronto Maple Leafs follow closely behind the Boston Bruins in the Atlantic Division. However, it's worth noting that the Maple Leafs have not won the Stanley Cup since 1967, making their quest for the championship even more exciting.

In the Metropolitan Division, the race to secure a spot in the playoffs is just as intense. Despite the fierce competition, four teams have already clinched a spot in the Atlantic Division. The final spot is currently held by the Toronto Maple Leafs, who will undoubtedly give their all to secure a place in the playoffs.

As the Holy Cross Men's Ice Hockey team continues its season, the focus remains on the game and the potential for McLinskey, Gale, and the team to make history. With the Hobey Baker Memorial Award within reach and a strong showing in the Atlantic Division, the future looks bright for this dedicated team.
