Nigeria's city, Lagos, positions itself as the digital commencement ground for Africa during GITEX Nigeria event.
Lagos, Nigeria, is set to host the largest tech, AI, and startup gathering in West Africa from September 1-4. This four-day event, known as GITEX Nigeria, is a testament to Lagos's growing status as a crucible of innovation and a hub for foreign tech investment.
Organised by KAOUN International, GITEX Nigeria is backed by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and endorsed by the Lagos State Government. The event, which will take place in both Abuja and Lagos, is expected to attract corporates, financiers, global partners, and startups, making it the country's largest investor program.
Between 2019 and 2024, Lagos attracted $6B in foreign tech investment. More than 70% of Nigeria's total tech inflows are in Lagos, making it a significant player in the digital economy.
The government of Lagos State, under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, sees Lagos as Africa's innovation nerve center. Sanwo-Olu recently declared the state as "a launchpad for Africa's tomorrow". The Governor is focused on building a data-driven government to drive economic growth and reduce inequality, creating shared prosperity for all Nigerians.
Kashifu Abdullahi, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), shares Sanwo-Olu's sentiment, viewing Nigeria and Lagos as a crucible of innovation, ready to face challenges.
Lagos's digital economy encompasses technical efficiency and productivity gains for all sectors. The city hosts hyperscale data centers and extensive fiber infrastructure, providing a robust digital backbone for businesses and startups.
President Bola Tinubu has prioritised the digital economy as a central aspect of his Renewed Hope agenda. The digital economy aims to grow the economy, reduce inequality, and create shared prosperity for all Nigerians.
The GITEX Nigeria Tech Expo & Future Economy Conference will be held at Eko Hotel Convention Centre, Lagos, while the GITEX Nigeria Startup Festival will be held at Landmark Centre, Lagos. With 23 of Nigeria's 28 fastest-growing companies based in Lagos, according to the Financial Times, the city is poised to lead Nigeria's digital transformation.
