Nio Announces Temporary Complimentary Battery Swap Service En Route to Mount Everest
In the realm of electric vehicle (EV) innovation, Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO) is making strides with its latest initiative. The Chinese EV manufacturer is offering a limited-time free battery swap service along the G318 Chengdu-Lhasa national road, enabling users to reach Mount Everest entirely through battery swaps, overcoming long-distance travel concerns.
This service, available from August 29 to October 12, is extended to all Nio and Onvo users, excluding operational vehicles. The China State Grid Corporation is also providing this service, making it an exciting collaboration for EV enthusiasts.
Nio's charging network boasts an impressive scale, with 4,721 charging stations and 27,036 charging points nationwide. It also integrates over 1,343,337 third-party charging points, ensuring widespread coverage. As of August 16, Nio has completed initial coverage of the G318 route with 15 battery swap stations installed along the 2,950-kilometer stretch.
The G318 route, once among China's most treacherous highways, was first opened about 70 years ago and has evolved into a renowned scenic route. It features a 5,000-meter elevation drop, traversing diverse landscapes including plains, hills, gorges, snow-capped mountains, glaciers, grasslands, and lakes.
Nio's founder, chairman, and CEO William Li, personally drove the third-generation ES8 SUV to verify the battery swap network along this route earlier this month. Li has encouraged people from across China to experience the Sichuan-Tibet region and reach Mount Everest using battery swaps throughout the journey.
This news was reported by CnEVPost and marks another significant step in the latest developments in the battery market related to Nio. The company began pre-sales for the third-generation ES8 on August 21, with the official launch scheduled for Nio Day 2025 at the end of next month. As of now, Nio operates 3,466 battery swap stations across China, including 1,001 along highways.
