No casualties of German nationals reported in cable car tragedy overseas
The tragic cable car accident that occurred in Lisbon on Wednesday evening at the historic funicular "Elevador da Gloria" has left many lives altered. Here are the latest updates on the victims and the ongoing investigation.
The cable car accident claimed the lives of at least 16 individuals, with five Portuguese fatalities identified so far. The identity of three deceased remains unclear, and the exact number of German nationals involved in the incident is not specified.
According to Portuguese media, including "Observador" and "Correio da Manha", one of the victims was a German. However, the German father involved in the accident has not yet been officially identified. Reports suggest that he had a seriously injured wife and a lightly injured three-year-old child.
Two foreign fatalities have been identified with certainty: two from South Korea and one from Switzerland. Two Canadians, one Ukrainian, and one American are assumed to have died based on "information already collected".
The accident occurred due to a defect in the cable of the funicular, marking the first of its kind to occur with one of the three funiculars operated since the 19th century in Lisbon.
Not all injured persons may have reported to the German embassy in Lisbon, possibly because they had only minor injuries. As a result, the Foreign Office currently does not assume that a German national has died in the Lisbon cable car incident. According to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin, there are no German nationals among the fatalities at this point in time.
Luís Neves, the head of the Portuguese criminal police, had announced that "probably" a German was among the dead. However, secure findings will take some time to be available.
The search for the causes of the accident and answers regarding the maintenance of the funicular is ongoing. The seriousness of the wife's injuries and the light injuries of the three-year-old child are reported.
It could not be ruled out that further German nationals were among the injured persons. The investigation into this tragic incident continues, with the hope that answers will soon be found to bring some closure to the affected families.
