No details on the Dutch scenario have been disclosed by the Commission.
On a sunny afternoon of August 27, 2025, a suspected fraudulent duo was apprehended by the special unit WEGA and local police in Vienna's 3rd district. The arrest took place in Düsseldorf, following a cunning scheme that involved stopping vehicles on the A 59 highway.
The duo, dressed in suits, were standing by a dark car on the hard shoulder, appearing to be in distress. They had been attempting to stop vehicles between the Benrath and Düsseldorf-Süd motorway junctions. Their plan was to approach unsuspecting drivers and claim they needed help, all the while attempting to obtain cash from helpful bystanders.
The arresting officers included a civilian patrol who noticed the suspicious activity from the opposite lane. The white VW Golf occupied by a 61-year-old from Solingen was found on the hard shoulder, and the suspects' vehicle was secured as evidence.
Despite being uncooperative and aggressive at the scene, the two suspects - a 61-year-old and a 22-year-old - were taken to the police station "Polizeiinspektion Wien-Mitte" for questioning. The 22-year-old even offered a "golden" ring to the 61-year-old in an attempt to further their scheme.
The police advise caution when offering help for broken-down vehicles on the hard shoulder, as such incidents may not always be as they seem. Inquiries regarding this case can be made to the Düsseldorf Police Press Office.
Investigations regarding the case are still ongoing, and the public is encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities.
