In the city of Chemnitz, a recent issue with the drinking water supply has been successfully resolved. The regulatory limit of zero coliform bacteria in 100 milliliters of drinking water was exceeded due to an increase in Serratia fonticola, an environmental bacterium.

However, a series of coordinated measures, involving Versorger eins, inetz, Südsachsen Wasser, and the City of Chemnitz's Health and Prevention Office, proved effective in addressing the issue. Extensive network inspections and disinfection measures were implemented, and these efforts have now brought the drinking water in Chemnitz back within regulatory limits.

The detection of Serratia fonticola in Chemnitz's drinking water network in early July raised concerns. The operator of the upstream network is Südsachsen Wasser, while the operator of the city's network is inetz. Around 850 water samples from the remote water supplier Zweckverband Fernwasser Südsachsen are taken each year, and these samples, along with additional official samples taken by the City of Chemnitz's Health and Prevention Office annually, are routinely tested for water quality.

The source of the Serratia fonticola occurrence remains unidentified. Higher temperatures and stagnation due to low water consumption in parts of the water network are suspected to have played a role.

Despite the resolution of the issue, ongoing monitoring is crucial. The water quality continues to be constantly monitored, and enhanced monitoring and continued coordination among all involved institutions are ongoing to maintain the achieved status. The involved partners are currently in exchange with other regional and national suppliers, scientific institutions, and authorities who have had similar issues.

Disinfection measures are being gradually reduced, and no traces of the environmental bacterium Serratia fonticola have been detected in Chemnitz's drinking water for over two weeks. The drinking water is now fully consumable, and the city's residents can rest assured that their water supply is safe.

In Chemnitz, Versorger eins routinely tests over 100 water samples annually to ensure the continued safety and quality of the city's drinking water. The collaborative efforts of the city's authorities, water suppliers, and scientific institutions have proven effective in resolving this issue and maintaining the safety of Chemnitz's drinking water supply.
