In a significant diplomatic move, South Korean National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-shik met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Beijing. The meeting took place amid strained inter-Korean relations, and no specific plans for a meeting between Woo and Kim were mentioned.

The encounter between Kim Jong Un and Woo Won-shik was a rare occurrence, marking a notable event amid the ongoing tension on the Korean Peninsula. During the interaction, Woo expressed hope for discussing ways to foster peace if a meeting with Kim occurred. However, North Korea has dismissed such overtures, stating it is not interested in talks.

The visit to Beijing also coincided with the formal surrender anniversary of Japan in World War Two, for which a military parade was held. Woo represented South Korea at the event, marking a symbolic gesture of unity and peace.

One of the lawmakers accompanying Woo has past experience in facilitating inter-Korean dialogue. Despite the absence of concrete discussions regarding the Korean Peninsula peace situation, Woo emphasized the importance of building peace during his meeting with Putin.

During the meeting, Putin asked if Woo had a message to deliver to Kim Jong Un. Woo replied that building peace on the Korean Peninsula was "very important." However, he did not report any direct communication or message delivery to Kim Jong Un during his meeting with Putin.

The visit did not result in a resumption of dialogue between Seoul and Pyongyang. Woo and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung have urged the resumption of dialogue between the two nations, emphasizing its significance for peace on the Korean Peninsula.

In the face of ongoing tensions, Woo expressed uncertainty about a potential meeting with Kim Jong Un before departing for Beijing. Despite the challenges, the visit underscores the ongoing efforts to foster dialogue and promote peace on the Korean Peninsula.
