North Korea's efforts to erase all signs of Kim Jong Un's presence following his meeting with Putin in Beijing, as reported by the media.
In a recent development, a Kremlin reporter, Alexander Yunashev, shared a video on social media, offering a glimpse into the meticulous cleaning routine of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's team. The video shows two of Kim's staff meticulously cleaning a room where Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently met.
This practice of cleaning rooms and removing items is not new. In 2019, after a summit with former US President Donald Trump in Hanoi, Kim's guards were reported to have cleaned his hotel room for several hours and removed items, including the mattress.
The special toilet used by Kim Jong Un is also brought along to prevent foreign intelligence services from obtaining samples and for the disposal of his waste, trash, and cigarette butts. This practice has been a standard protocol since the time of Kim's father, Kim Jong Il.
Michael Madden, an expert on North Korean leadership, stated that bringing a special toilet prevents foreign intelligence services from obtaining samples. The toilet is used to prevent even friendly intelligence services from testing samples.
Before the 2023 summit with Putin, Kim's guards not only disinfected the chair but also checked it with a metal detector. They cleaned the chair Kim sat on, the side table next to it, and even took away Kim's glass.
In 2018, during a meeting with then-South Korean President Moon Jae-in, North Korean guards disinfected the chair and table before Kim sat down. Reuters reported a video showing extraordinary measures taken by North Korea to hide details about Kim's health condition.
Interestingly, the Chinese leader Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un discussed the possibility of living to 150 years old during a military parade in Beijing. However, a microphone slip revealing a secret conversation about immortality between Putin and Xi Jinping during a 2025 event in Beijing has led to speculation about a prior meeting to discuss this topic, but no such meeting has been confirmed.
These security measures taken by Kim Jong Un's team are aimed at maintaining security and privacy, as reported by South Korean and Japanese intelligence services. The North Korean leader's team has been noted to take these measures in all of his foreign trips.
