Nostalgic Return to the 90s on Authentic Hardware

In the world of retro computing, a new project has caught the attention of tech enthusiasts. Eivind, a developer, has created a unique system that allows software built for the DOS and early Windows 98 era to run natively - the Vortex86EX build.

This build, which was recently featured on Hackaday, is a testament to the enduring appeal of classic computing. The system-on-module at its heart uses a 32-bit x86 instruction set, enabling it to run a wide range of DOS games and applications.

One of the standout features of this build is its compatibility with DOS-era hardware. A microSD card reader is included for easy file transfers, while a virtual floppy drive allows for interfacing with modern computers. The system also includes a serial port, a feature missing from many modern machines, and expansion ports to add other sound cards, including ones with Yamaha OPL chips.

To replicate the sound quality of the DOS era, the motherboard uses a Crystal CS4237B chip connected to the ISA bus, mimicking a SoundBlaster card from this era. This ensures that the audio output is as authentic as possible.

The Vortex86EX build is not just a novelty item for retro computing enthusiasts. It can be used for interfacing minimally with modern computers, making it a versatile tool for those who want to experience the charm of the DOS era while still benefiting from modern conveniences.

Other similar builds have been created for legacy industrial applications, demonstrating the practicality and relevance of this technology in today's world.

Stephen tipped us off about this exciting project, and we can't wait to see what other retro computing innovations the future holds. If you're a fan of DOS gaming or just appreciate the nostalgia of classic computing, keep an eye on this space for more updates on the Vortex86EX build.
