Notebook recovered after theft
In a series of events that unfolded on Tuesday afternoon, two suspects were arrested in a tram near Hürth, a town close to Cologne, Germany.
The drama began when the owner of a laptop noticed that her backpack, containing her wallet and the laptop, was missing from her car in the Brigittengasse at midday. She immediately contacted the police and provided them with real-time tracking information of the stolen laptop.
The laptop, it seemed, had a unique feature that allowed its owner to track its location. The device was first spotted on video surveillance at the Rudolfplatz, then moving towards the Neumarkt. Police surveillance footage showed that two men had boarded the tram with the bag at the Neumarkt.
As the laptop suddenly moved quickly on the tracks towards Hürth, the owner guided the patrol teams to the location of the stolen laptop and the suspects. The pursuing officers stopped the tram heading out of town at the "Fischenich" stop, where they arrested the two men.
The arrested suspects, aged 45 and 52, are accused of stealing a backpack from an unlocked car in the Cologne city center. Both men were found to have the computer in a plastic bag.
The stolen backpack, unfortunately, has not been found yet. Witnesses are asked to contact the Criminal Commission 74 by phone or email to provide any information they might have about the incident.
The identities of the police officers who arrested the two suspects are not publicly disclosed in the available information. Only the event of the arrest of two alleged thieves on August 26, 2025, in a tram in Hürth near Cologne is reported without naming the officers involved.
Both men are to be brought before a judge later today. The laptop has been returned to its rightful owner, bringing some relief in this otherwise unsettling situation.
