Numerous trainee departures during the learning phase, why?

The 2021 Formula 1 training day at the Zandvoort circuit saw an unusual number of spin-offs, with several drivers losing control of their vehicles. The wind was a major contributing factor, making the track's challenging layout even more demanding.

Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz, George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, and Yuki Tsunoda all experienced spins during the day. Hamilton, however, did not blame the wind for his two spins, instead attributing them to pushing too hard and the car's lack of comfort.

George Russell, on the other hand, theorised that the wind has a greater influence on a track like Zandvoort compared to other Formula 1 circuits. He pointed out that tracks with sweeping corners, like Silverstone, are less affected by wind gusts due to their design. Conversely, he argued that Zandvoort's many 180-degree corners make it more susceptible to wind gusts.

Alex Albon attributed his spin before turn 1 in the second training session to the wind, and his spin resulted in the second red flag of the session. Kimi Antonelli was the only driver who required a red flag due to being stuck in the gravel pit after locking his tires in FP1, causing the first red flag of the day.

Lance Stroll crashed his Aston Martin into the over-raised Hugenholtzbocht at the beginning of the training, causing heavy damage and the first red flag of the session. He remained uninjured from the crash.

The Ferrari driver's car was described as being very unpredictable, with Carlos Sainz experiencing a spin during the training.

Lewis Hamilton had another big incident during the second practice session, spinning 360 degrees for the second time that day.

Three red flags were recorded during the training day, which is unusual compared to other circuits where such incidents are rare within a day.

Despite the challenges posed by the wind and the track's surface characteristics, the drivers will be aiming to put in strong performances during the qualifying and the race, with the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix set to take place on Sunday.
