NYPD is scrutinizing the passing of an individual discovered in a detention center at a court house in Brooklyn, following his petty larceny apprehension the day prior.

In Downtown Brooklyn, the New York Police Department (NYPD) is currently investigating an in-custody death that occurred at the 120 Schermerhorn St. facility on Friday night. This tragic incident marks the second reported in-custody death at the same facility this year.

The deceased man was found unconscious and unresponsive inside a holding cell at around 8:15 p.m. on Aug. 29. Police believe that the man suffered an unknown medical episode while in his cell. Responding EMS units pronounced him dead at the scene.

Details about the man's identity have been withheld, pending family notification. However, it is known that he had been arrested for petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property, allegedly for stealing shrimp and crab from a Whole Foods Market.

The NYPD Force Investigation Division is conducting a formal inquiry into the latest in-custody death. It is not specified what medical episode the man in the recent incident suffered, and there is no publicly available detailed information about Soso Ramishvili, who died in custody at the same facility in January 2020. In March, another man, Soso Ramishvili, 32, of Avenue X, died after being found unconscious and unresponsive inside a holding cell at the same facility.

In the earlier incident, Ramishvili had been brought several times to a local hospital for evaluation and was subsequently released back into police custody, days prior to his death. The man's body was transferred to the Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Ramishvili's attorneys disputed the account of Ramishvili's hospital visits and release before his death.

Sources familiar with the case stated that the man in the recent incident had more than 90 arrests on his rap sheet, including burglary and drug possession. It is also reported that the man was found to have a crack pipe on him during his arrest.

The NYPD continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the latest in-custody death at the 120 Schermerhorn St. facility. The public awaits the results of the autopsy and the findings of the formal inquiry to gain a clearer understanding of the events leading up to the man's death.
