NYPD officer sustains injury from fellow officer during clash in Queens involving carjacker, according to police reports.
In a shocking turn of events, a New York Police Department (NYPD) detective was injured by gunfire during a hostage situation at the Whitestone Bridge in Queens, NY, on Friday morning.
The incident unfolded around 8:50 a.m., when the suspect, identified as Kevin Dubuisson, attempted to steal a Black Toyota Highlander from an Uber driver parked on the bridge's service road. According to reports, Dubuisson appeared to have a firearm when he approached the car, but the NYPD later confirmed that he did not have a gun on him during the incident.
The Uber driver's account led the NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU) to swiftly respond to the scene. The ESU, along with officers from the 109th Precinct and detectives from the Queens South narcotics unit, attempted to block Dubuisson from driving away while they worked to arrest him.
As the arrest attempt ensued, gunshots were fired, and the detective was hit in the crossfire. The detective, who has 12 years of experience on the force, was taken to the hospital in stable condition with injuries to his right hand and leg.
Tisch and Mayor Adams visited the detective and his family, and they reported that he was in good spirits. The NYPD will review body-camera footage of the incident, as stated by Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny.
Prior to this incident, Dubuisson had initially tried to steal two other cars at or near a gas station on Parsons Boulevard and 20th Avenue but was warded off. After being taken into custody at the scene, Dubuisson is currently in police custody, and information for his lawyer was not immediately available on Friday.
This is a developing story based on preliminary information from the NYPD, and updates may be provided as more information becomes available. Our thoughts are with the injured detective and his family during this difficult time.
