Offenbach's Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Expansion

Offenbach, a city in Germany, is taking strides towards a greener future by expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The initiative, spearheaded by Mayor Sabine Groß and the Climate Commissioner, aims to facilitate the use of electric cars and reduce air and noise pollution.

The project kicked off in 2023 with the installation of the first charging station, operated by EVO, on Senefelderstraße. This station boasts two charging points, each with a capacity of 22 kilowatts.

Mayor Groß expressed her satisfaction with the start of the expansion project, highlighting the advantage of having multiple providers in the city. This diversity, she explains, can lead to competitive pricing, as observed in other municipalities.

The city's analysis from 2019 predicts that Offenbach will need over 100 charging stations by 2030 to meet the growing demand. To ensure sustainable and demand-oriented growth, the city initiated a procedure to control the expansion of charging infrastructure.

Three operators - EVO, EZE.Network, and Qwello - have been selected to implement the charging infrastructure in Offenbach. EZE.Network plans to have six charging stations operational by mid-2025, with the first one on Berliner Straße set to go into operation from February.

Qwello, with the most planned charging stations in the city area, will begin its expansion in the first quarter of 2025. By the end of 2025, up to 50 more E-charging stations could be rolled out in Offenbach.

The current project in Offenbach aims to create the infrastructure for more electric cars and fewer exhaust gases and noise. The EVO charging stations, for instance, accept payments via credit cards, common charging cards, or apps.

The expansion of charging infrastructure in Offenbach is not just about meeting the increasing demand but also sending a signal for more sustainability. As the city progresses, it moves closer to its goal of contributing to electromobility and a cleaner, quieter environment.
