Former Anapa Police Officer Alexei Funtov Convicted of Attempted Fraud, Sentence Reduced

Alexei Funtov, a former operative in the economic crimes unit of the Anapa City Police Department, has been convicted of attempted fraud after being found guilty of attempting to obtain 200,000 rubles by promising to help someone avoid criminal responsibility.

The original sentence was handed down by the Anapa City Court on November 8, 2010. The initial sentence was two years and six months in a general-regime correctional colony, under Article 30, Part 3 and Article 159, Part 3 of the Russian Criminal Code.

However, Funtov's lawyer appealed the verdict, seeking a lighter sentence. The Criminal College of the Krasnodar Regional Court agreed with the defense's argument and amended the verdict. Funtov's sentence was reduced to a fine of 500,000 rubles and one year and six months of restricted freedom.

The reduced sentence does not include imprisonment in a general-regime correctional colony. Funtov was arrested before he could fulfill his promise, which may have contributed to the court's decision to impose a non-custodial sentence.
