Official opening of Kransand recreational areas in Mainz-Kastel: Unveiling of Trimmdich-equipment, skate park, and food stall
The riverside promenade in the Wiesbaden district of Mainz-Kastel has undergone a significant transformation, with the Kransand leisure area taking centre stage. Spanning approximately 12,000 square meters, this redesign project, initiated by the city of Wiesbaden, was completed over a decade, costing around 1.5 million euros.
Located next to the Theodor-Heuss-Bridge, the Kransand leisure area is now a vibrant hub of activity, offering a variety of amenities for visitors of all ages. The area features seating steps, fitness equipment, and a skate park adorned with cool wall paintings that are sure to appeal to teenagers.
For the younger visitors, a separate play area has been created. Surrounded by lush greenery, the leisure area also boasts a kiosk, making it a perfect spot for a quick bite or a refreshing drink. Expressive wall graffiti, reminiscent of urban art, adds a touch of creativity to the space.
The redesign, spearheaded by an unspecified landscape architect from Cologne, has been praised by local officials. Mayor Gert-Uwe Mende (SPD) expressed his satisfaction with the "urban repair" of the Kransand leisure area, seeing it as a good example for the further development of the Rhine-Main riverside concept. Mayor Christiane Hinninger (Greens) also highlighted the planting of 21 trees, around 570 square meters of perennials, and a further 250 square meters of flowers in the area.
The revamped area is also cyclist-friendly, providing an easy route for two-wheeled travellers. The success of the project has also extended to the Bruckenkopf bus stop, nicknamed the "Beduin tent", although its popularity was somewhat moderate due to high walls restricting visibility at the roundabout.
Looking ahead, the city of Wiesbaden has plans to further enhance the riverside. A new plan for the former "Kies-Menz-Area" will be developed by the Cologne-based landscape architecture firm "Maier", and planning for a fortified riverbank slope with seating steps at the Rhine meadows in the Biebrich district is set to begin this year.
The Kransand leisure area was officially inaugurated with a festival on a specific date (Sunday). With its numerous inviting green corners, the area warmly welcomes visitors to stay and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere it offers.
