Olympic gold medal-winning training partner of Jon Jones is poised for his much-anticipated mixed martial arts debut.

After making history as the youngest American freestyle wrestler to win Olympic gold in the super heavyweight division at just 21 years old, Gable Steveson has embarked on a new challenge. In March 2021, he revealed his intentions to make his MMA debut during a appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show'.

Following his Olympic triumph, Steveson signed with the WWE in August 2021, but was eventually released from his contract in May 2024, having only appeared in one televised match. Instead, the Olympic gold medallist and two-time NCAA Division I champion has been honing his skills at Syndicate MMA in Las Vegas, a gym that has seen the likes of reigning UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili pass through its doors.

Steveson's move to MMA has been a long time coming. He has been teasing a transition for quite some time, and his preparations have seen him train alongside former two-weight UFC champion Jon Jones, whom he credits as a 'great mentor'. Steveson even helped Jones prepare for his UFC heavyweight title defence against Stipe Miocic last November at the Jackson Wink Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

On September 12, Steveson will make his MMA debut at LFA 217, co-headlining the show at Prior Lake's Mystic Lake Casino Hotel in Minnesota against 1-0 heavyweight Braden Peterson. With all of his other options exhausted, Steveson returned to the University of Minnesota to fulfil his final year of eligibility and challenge for a third NCAA title. However, his aspirations lie beyond wrestling, and he is now ready to test himself in the octagon.

Despite his brief stint in the WWE and a short-lived NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, where he failed to make the cut for the 53-man squad, Steveson remains focused on his MMA journey. His debut is sure to be a highly anticipated event, as he looks to make a mark in a new sport and continue his impressive run of achievements.
