Online gaming operators in New Jersey face stricter regulations aimed at promoting responsible gaming practices
In August 2025, New Jersey's gaming revenue reached an impressive $642.2 million, marking a significant 15.7% increase from the previous year. This growth places New Jersey as one of the largest online betting markets in the United States, leading the way in both expansion and regulation.
However, amidst this growth, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE) is taking proactive steps to ensure the well-being of its players. Every licensed casino organisation in the state is now required to appoint a person responsible for overseeing responsible gaming. This individual is known as the Responsible Gaming Lead.
The Responsible Gaming Lead plays a crucial role in identifying and addressing at-risk accounts. They are tasked with tracking these accounts and ensuring that players receive proper assistance. In cases where warning signs persist, the Responsible Gaming Lead may be responsible for shutting down accounts.
The DGE has outlined a mandatory three-step intervention process. The first step, Initial Outreach, involves sending an email to the player explaining various responsible gaming tools and resources available. If the player does not respond to three attempts at Direct Contact, the account will be suspended until contact is made, and potentially closed if the risk continues.
The second step, Account Restriction, limits a player's access to betting until they watch a DGE-approved tutorial. The third and final step, Direct Contact, requires the Responsible Gaming Lead to call or video chat with the player.
Regulators nationwide are tightening oversight around gambling-related harm, and New Jersey is leading the charge. The DGE aims to create a more proactive system that identifies risk earlier and protects players more effectively with stricter compliance and new intervention steps.
In a recent development, Birches Health secured a $20 million funding round in September, reflecting growing investment in clinical partnerships designed to complement state-level responsible gaming policies.
As New Jersey's gaming industry continues to thrive, the focus on responsible gaming practices is more important than ever. With stricter regulations and a dedicated Responsible Gaming Lead in every licensed organisation, players can gamble with confidence, knowing that their well-being is a top priority.
