Ostrich farm in Edgewood, B.C. fails to overturn rejection in appeals process

In the picturesque town of Edgewood, B.C., the Universal Ostrich Farm is facing an uncertain future. The farm, home to a unique ostrich herd, could soon be impacted by a cull due to avian influenza, a decision that's sparked controversy and calls for intervention.

The current Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, could potentially play a role in preventing the destruction of the ostrich herd. However, there is no clear timeline on when the cull will begin.

Animal Justice, an animal welfare organization, has criticised the court's ruling regarding the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's (CFIA) disease control approach. They argue that stamping out entire flocks, especially those showing signs of recovery, is a policy that needs to evolve.

Drew Pasitney, the owner of the Universal Ostrich Farm, shares this sentiment. He emphasises that the ostriches are more than just livestock; they have personalities and names. No amount of compensation, up to $1.2 million under Canada's Compensation for Destroyed Animals and Things Regulations, can replace the loss of these unique individuals.

Pasitney is hopeful for a last-minute emergency stay order or for Prime Minister Mark Carney to intervene and halt the destruction. He calls for a reassessment of the CFIA's disease control policies, especially in cases where animals appear to have recovered.

Camille Labchuk, lawyer and executive director at Animal Justice, has expressed concern over the deaths of ostriches due to avian influenza in factory farming. She urges for a more humane and effective approach to disease control that prioritises the welfare of animals.
