Over 11,000 individuals partake in a "relaxed" and "peaceful" rally, slated for May 1
In the heart of Berlin, thousands gathered on May 2 for the annual Revolutionary May Day demonstration. Amidst a tense lead-up, 11,600 individuals participated in a peaceful and relaxed event, expressing international anti-war solidarity.
The dominant theme of the protest was solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Flags, banners, and chants of "Free Free Palestine" echoed throughout the city, reflecting the sentiment of the crowd. The organisers of the event, focusing on international anti-war solidarity, had planned for the march to be a show of unity.
Despite the large police presence, there were no major incidents during the demonstration. Berlin deployed 6,200 police officers to maintain order, with initial plans to fly helicopters over the route to discover any hidden depots. However, these plans seemed to be backtracked upon, with authorities commenting they were clarifying whether there were additional construction sites they were not previously aware of.
Concerns about secret depots of stones and roof tiling set up by left-wing radical groups were raised before the demonstration. These depots, located in various hidden spots across Berlin, were feared to be used by violent demonstrators. However, the peaceful nature of the event dispelled these fears.
Six people were reportedly arrested during the demonstration, although the number may increase. Authorities in Berlin had promised immediate action against any anti-Israeli speech during the event, but the atmosphere remained peaceful throughout.
The organisers initially claimed that 30,000 individuals participated in the demonstration, while police reported 11,600. Regardless of the exact number, the event served as a powerful reminder of the city's commitment to peace and solidarity.
