"Over 50,000 homes left without electricity due to fire suspicion, authorities relate the incident to potential arson"
Major Power Outage Hits South-East Berlin
A significant power outage affected the Treptow-Koepenick area in south-east Berlin on Tuesday, 9th September, 2020. The grid operator for Berlin, Stromnetz Berlin, reported the outage, which left approximately 50,000 households and businesses without power.
The cause of the outage is suspected to be arson, as reported by the police. A fire on two power lines in Berlin-Johannisthal, which occurred around 03:30 on Tuesday morning, is believed to be the source of the incident. However, the suspect behind the arson remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.
Authorities suspect a politically motivated attack by extremists, but a left-wing anarchist group has claimed responsibility in an online statement. No individual has been identified or arrested in connection with the claim.
The power outage has resulted in entire streets being impacted, causing disruptions to normal operations in the affected areas. Public transport services have been affected, with lines S45, S46, S47, S8, S85, and S9 temporarily interrupted. S-Bahn traffic has suffered delays and cancellations as a result of the incident.
Firefighters have managed to extinguish the blaze, but it remains unclear how long the power outage will last. The spokesperson for Stromnetz Berlin has emphasised the magnitude of the incident, comparing it to the large-scale outage in Köpenick in 2019, which affected 30,000 households and lasted for 31 hours. Electrical systems at Schöneweide were initially not functioning, but power has now been restored, and trains are running again.
Emergency numbers 110 and 112 are down in the affected area, adding to the challenges faced by residents and authorities alike.
This is a developing story, and more information will be provided as it becomes available.
