Over 95% of components in natural beauty products originate from natural sources!
In the beauty and personal care industry, there's a growing trend towards natural and organic products. Consumers are increasingly concerned about the impact of their choices on both their health and the environment. This shift in consumer behaviour has led to a surge in demand for natural cosmetics.
One company at the forefront of this movement is Provital, which offers certified vegetable extracts Cosmos as part of its Eco range. But what exactly does it mean for a cosmetic product to be natural?
According to the international ISO 16128 standard, a natural cosmetic product is composed of natural ingredients, derived from nature, whether of vegetable, animal, or mineral origin. These products should contain very few chemical or synthetic elements. In France, the ARPP (Association de la Recherche, de l'Enseignement et de la Promotion de la Pharmacie) gave a definition of the natural cosmetic product in July 2019, stating that it must have a natural/of natural origin content greater than or equal to 95%.
The COSMOS (COSMetic Organic Standard) certification is a globally recognised label for natural and organic cosmetic products. More than 29,000 products worldwide bear the COSMOS NATURAL or COSMOS ORGANIC label, including products from companies like Shaanxi Huatai Bio-Fine Chemical Co., Ltd. and brands like Weleda. Certification bodies like Bureau Veritas, Cosmecert, or Ecocert verify compliance with the COSMOS criteria and certify products and ingredients.
The COSMOS reference covers the entire life cycle of the product, including origin and traceability, gentle production process, product composition, packaging, storage, labeling, and communication, audit, certification, and control. This holistic approach ensures that consumers can trust the products they are buying.
Consumers are not only looking for natural ingredients, but also for storytelling aligned with the need for nature. Provital, for example, develops projects like BioDeVaTe, a collaboration project with farmers in the Barcelona region to obtain aromatic plants and flowers from organic farming.
The desire to reconnect with nature among consumers is evident. They carefully read the list of ingredients in a product and look for natural cosmetics produced from active ingredients derived from plant extracts. This trend is not just a passing fad; it's a reflection of a growing movement towards responsible consumption, ethics, and planet-friendly products.
Certifications like COSMOS enable beauty and personal care brands to communicate transparently about their commitments, strengthen consumer trust, and access new markets. As the demand for natural and organic cosmetics continues to grow, it's clear that this trend is here to stay.
