Over eighty percent of Britons perceive the UK as being in a 'poor' condition
A new survey conducted by YouGov reveals that the British public's perception of the UK's state relative to other Western countries has worsened over the past year. The survey, which was carried out during the 2024 general election campaign, suggests that the majority of the British public believes the UK is in a "bad" state, with 82% considering it to be in a bad state, a figure similar to last year's.
The survey indicates that 36% of British people consider the UK to be "very bad," a 5% increase from the previous year. Only 14% of British people think the UK is in good health, a significant drop from the past. The number of Britons considering the UK to be in a "very good" state has dropped to just 1%.
The survey findings suggest that the new Labour government, led by Keir Starmer, is facing issues similar to those faced by the Conservatives. Respondents might have anticipated that a change of government would improve things, but the majority opinion is that Starmer is struggling to improve the country's situation, particularly with issues like immigration, where illegal crossings have increased despite promises of a tougher policy.
The survey also reveals that the government's policies, including tax increases and changes that deter wealthy people, may be contributing to the continued negative perception of the UK's state. Changes made by the government have deterred many wealthy people from being based in the country, which could potentially impact the economy.
The survey further reveals that three quarters of respondents said they think the UK is in a worse state than it was a decade ago. Worryingly, 60% of respondents believe conditions in the UK will deteriorate in the year ahead.
The survey results paint a bleak picture of the UK's current state, with 48% of respondents saying things at home are worse than most or all other Western states, a 5% increase from last year. More than 8 out of 10 British people believe their country is in a "bad" state, a figure that has remained relatively consistent over the past year.
The survey findings underscore the challenges faced by the Labour government as they navigate through a difficult economic landscape. The government will need to address these concerns and work towards improving the public's perception of the UK's state if they are to regain the trust and support of the British public.
