Over twenty passengers from a Delta airline flight receive medical attention following unexpected turbulence, prompting an emergency landing

Delta Air Lines flight DL56, bound for Amsterdam from Salt Lake City, experienced severe turbulence on July 30, 2025. The turbulence resulted in 25 passengers requiring hospital evaluation after an emergency landing at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.

The Airbus A330-900 aircraft, carrying 275 passengers and 13 crew members, was forced to make an unplanned landing in Minneapolis around 7:45 p.m. local time. Emergency medical teams met the flight, and those injured were transported to hospitals for assessment and care. Delta stated that the majority of those evaluated have since been released.

The turbulence caused service carts and unbelted passengers to be thrown into the air, with some passengers reportedly lifted off their seats. One passenger, William Webster, described the turbulence as the "craziest" he had ever experienced. The aircraft reportedly plunged around 1,000 feet during the turbulence according to passenger accounts, though Delta officials did not independently confirm this figure.

HealthPartners is assessing and treating some of the passengers who needed care after the flight. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the plane landed safely in St. Paul after the crew reported "severe" turbulence and will investigate the incident. The Minneapolis-Saint Paul Airport Fire Department and paramedics provided initial medical attention to passengers in need upon the plane's arrival at the gate.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the incident and expects a preliminary report to be ready in about a month. No official cause or investigation details have been released yet, but turbulence has been cited as the cause.

This is not the first incident of severe turbulence causing injuries on a commercial flight. Last year, seven people were injured due to severe turbulence on a United Airlines flight from Cancún to Chicago, and five people were taken to the hospital last month due to severe turbulence on an American Airlines flight from Miami to Raleigh, North Carolina. In 2024, 23 people - 20 of whom were crew members - were seriously injured in turbulence events, according to FAA data.

Delta expressed gratitude for the support of all emergency responders involved. The airline emphasized safety as its top priority and has been working to assist affected passengers.
