Overlooked crucial detail when purchasing my laptop, a mistake I've come to deeply regret

In the modern world of technology, a seemingly minor design oversight has become a significant inconvenience for many laptop users - the absence of charging ports on both sides of the device. This issue, which has been profitably addressed by the sale of dongles, hubs, and extension cables, was first highlighted by freelance writer and editor Tom May, who specializes in art, photography, design, and travel.

Tom, whose work has been featured in renowned publications such as The Sun, Radio Times, NME, T3, Heat, Company, and Bella, among others, recently encountered this problem while using a MacBook Air. Previously, his laptop had a plug on the right side, but the switch to the MacBook Air, with its two USB-C ports, both located on the left side, presented a new challenge.

This design choice has led to several problems, particularly when working in public places like coffee shops, railway stations, and hotel foyers. The power outlet is often situated on the wrong side, forcing users to make a choice between stretching the cable, sitting at an unnatural angle, or moving to another location. The limited availability of power outlets in these spaces further compounds the issue.

At home, the problem is equally pronounced. With a limited number of power outlets, using the MacBook Air can be problematic, leading to the need for additional solutions such as dongles and extension cables.

However, not all hope is lost. Some laptop manufacturers, such as Lenovo, have recognised this issue and offer laptops with charging ports on both sides, like some models in their ThinkPad series. When buying a new laptop, it is essential to consider the placement of the charging port, rather than focusing solely on the neural processing unit, graphics card, or amount of RAM.

While the MacBook Air's design may present challenges, it is not the only laptop on the market lacking dual charging ports. Many other laptop manufacturers have followed suit, creating a market for accessories designed to solve this problem.

Tom's advice when buying a new laptop is to prioritise the placement of the charging port. For those interested in video editing or Macbooks, he has written reviews on the best options available. By making this simple change, laptop users can avoid the inconvenience of a design oversight and ensure a smoother, more efficient work or leisure experience.
